Making the Most out of the ‘Nuts’

08 Jul, 2009 - Posted by Dan Brown in Poker Tips

There is nothing like flopping the absolute nuts in poker.  Your eyes pop out of your head and all you can think of is how to get the most money out of the hand.  This is not often very easy to do, but when you are in late position, you can make some more sophisticated plays that will allow you to get a little more money out of your opponent.

For the sake of argument, we will assume that you are on the button and have a middle position raiser in front of you.  The flop comes out and it is all you.  There is no other draw or card that can hurt you unless the board was to pair and give someone a boat.  As your opponent will probably throw out a continuation bet regardless of whether or not he hit, you know there is going to be more money in the pot.

This is where most poker players will make an error.  They get a little excited and decide to throw out a raise.  If your opponent does not have a hand, they are going to get out cheap at this point.  Just make the call and see what the turn brings before you make a move.  Now the turn hits and you are still in no danger or getting beat regardless of the river (except of course if the board were to pair and the danger of the boat is brought in).  If your opponent throws out a check, this is the one time that you may want to give him the free card and let him think that you are on a draw.

What this does is induce him to make a bet on the river regardless of what card hits. He will more than likely put you on some type of a draw and throw out a decent bet in order to take down the pot.  If you are lucky, the river card will improve his hand just a bit and then you can drop the hammer.

Reading your opponent is the key to the success here as it is going to dictate how much of a raise that you put in.  If you want to get called, the raise is going to have to be perfect.  Some players will come right back at you when you simply double the bet and others will wait for an overly aggressive raise, such as 6 or 7 times the last bet, that evokes a feeling of you trying to be a bully.  Pay attention to how they are playing and you may just end up getting all of your chips in with the nuts.

Flopping the nuts and making money on poker sites is not an easy thing to do.  You sometimes have to be very patient and let things develop before you can try and get some money from playing poker on poker sites.  Evaluating your opponents and patience will be the key to your success when you are building a pot with the nuts.

It’s All About the Benjamins’

11 Oct, 2008 - Posted by Briley in Poker Games

Everything in poker is driven around one single aspect; money. Money is everywhere in poker; and it is constantly flowing throughout the game. It trades hands and changes amounts, sometimes even in the thousands. Most players forget how much money means while playing the game; and focus more on other aspects such as strategies, moves, and opponents. A veteran of the sport knows that the importance of money and how much is involved should never be forgotten. In fact what sets most experts apart from novices is the fact that they play differently based on how much money they actually have in their stack. A good player makes sure the stack is always near the maximum limit; but at the same time when it is low not to throw it away to opponents.

Strategies and individual moves also play a big part in the overall poker game; but it is very important to note that they should be complimentary to the amount of money a player has in their stack. For instance, a player with a smaller stack that is running out of total available money should never bet aggressively or adopt an aggressive strategy. In fact they should do almost the complete opposite; fold as much as possible and only remain in the round when they are absolutely sure of a winning hand, even then they more than likely should just call opponent’s bets rather than make their own. This will enable them to build their stack back up safely. On the other hand players with a very large stack should not hoard all they have; they should re-structure their strategy to work with the amount of total they have obtained. In many instances a player with a large stack can put more on the line often without worrying about opponents; especially if those opponents have very little money in their own stack.

Some beginners of the sport also need to realize that money, even in its vast importance, is merely a tool. In order to win money from your opponents, you must bet money, and in many cases not only just bet it but lose it as well. Other beginners must learn to save money as opposed to throwing it on the table recklessly. It’s tough to grasp both sides of the argument completely and not remain on one of the extreme edges. Some players hoard their money and are afraid to lose it, while others bet everything they have and lose entirely too much of it. In order to become a veteran, you must embrace both aspects and center yourself in-between the two boundaries; and at the same time learn to remain cool while altering your strategies based on how much total money you have.

One of the scariest instances during a game is when your stack runs low and you are cornered into slowly dwindling away your chips. At this point you must learn to remain calm and keep yourself as highly focused at the table as possible. Never bet it all simply because you are running out. Take your time, assess every move more carefully and be absolutely sure before you call or raise. As mentioned before remain in the round only when you have to; only when you are absolutely sure you have a winning hand. Poker is all about lies, tricks and deceit and opponents will certainly use your lack of total money as an advantage to gain more whenever they have the chance.

The Value Of Strategy Versus Tactics

30 Sep, 2008 - Posted by Dan Brown in Poker Games

When you look for information on how to play poker effectively, you will often run into articles that place undue emphasis on developing poker tactics as opposed to developing poker strategies. With regard to the poker game, strategy can be defined as a thorough and wide-ranging plan of action that will serve you best in the long run. It is important to make the distinction between this and tactics, which are simply maneuvers that form the total strategy.

In a sense, tactics are best utilized as part of a bigger strategy, and not as the goal itself. Many beginning players are guilty of focusing too much on tactics without seeing the bigger picture. This leads to making decisions that may seem to result in the attainment of an immediate goal, but does little to advance the whole course of the game. Realizing that there is a clear need to form an effective strategy does little good at this point, since this realization more often than not results in regurgitating even more tactics instead of formulating an entire strategy for playing.

Interestingly enough, it is the nature of poker as a game that relies heavily on decisions that are made on the spur of the moment that inspires this way of thinking. Nevertheless, thinking only in the short term will effectively hinder your ability to make proper decisions that will serve you best the majority of the time. Poker isn’t really that complex a game, but the lack of an overall strategy can make things considerably more complicated for players that rely solely on tactics to get them through a game. What these players–and indeed all poker players–should realize is that adopting an effective strategy can actually make the decision making process a lot simpler.

It does not really take much to implement an effective poker strategy. In fact it can be as simple as wanting to win or simply wanting to have a few hours of fun at the poker table. Playing for fun as a strategy is simple enough but playing to win can be a bit more complicated depending on your skill level and how much you want to win. This will involve knowing what particular plays to make in the pursuit of your objective.

You can actually compare an effective strategy to a road map in the sense that it will help you see where you are going, the best route to take, and any obstacles that stand in your way. Moving through a game without a strategy is like knowing how to get to the next street but being utterly clueless after that point. Just as studying a road map thoroughly will help you get to your destination quicker with a minimum of fuss, so too will an effective poker strategy help you attain your goal the easiest and most efficient way possible. A holistic poker strategy will allow you to make the smaller decisions easier and ensure that they serve your poker game as a whole.

Choosing The Right Poker Game

30 Sep, 2008 - Posted by Dan Brown in Poker Games

In the quest to win as many games as possible, many poker players neglect the fact that game selection can often play a very important role in the achievement of that goal. This particular aspect of the game can take on different meanings depending on the player and their level of playing skill and their experience with the game. Of course location plays a part in the decision making process as well. If you live in a relatively small town where there are obviously fewer choices in poker games, your options are severely limited compared to a poker player who lives in a major urban center.

With regard to location, a more experienced and successful poker player may even look beyond the opportunities presented by his or her location and look to global venues in which to test their skills against players from other places. Factors such as your skill level, your playing habits, your personal preferences and of course your bankroll will come into play here as well. You may find that the poker playing opportunities presented by world famous gambling capitals such as Las Vegas are right up your alley, or a busy city like Los Angeles would be more to your liking.

In any case, it is important to be as well informed as you can possibly be about the place that you intend to play in, including details about what type of player you can typically expect to encounter there. In Las Vegas for example, you might find it helpful to know that the weakest players are by far the majority of the tourist crowd. These players tend to be quite reckless when playing poker, since they do not have the benefit of being able to play the game on that scale and that level on a regular basis. Poker players from Los Angeles on the other hand mostly have the benefit of regular games in their home turf, which may give them a certain degree of advantage.

That being said, the best poker players in the business tend to be the ones that can walk into any given scenario or poker room and sit down to play whatever game is laid out in front of them effectively. While their bankroll will obviously play a part in informing their decision, all things being equal, the best poker players will perform consistently well, whatever the stakes are.

One other thing that you have to keep in mind is that game selection becomes all the more important when there are either a wealth of games to choose from and when there is a more meager selection. While it can be next to impossible to choose the best possible game available with any degree of accuracy, you should at least be discriminating enough to find out which ones are better than the others. Keep a lookout for the tables that seem to command a healthy share of the action and compare them with other tables in the room. Take your time when making your decision and you will eventually find a game that is right for you.
